1.  Lose the “murk."

"Those who write clearly have readers; those who write obscurely have commentators."
 ~ Albert Camus
You know how it’s supposed to sound, but you need a fresh pair of eyes to find the problems in diction that can lead your readers off-track. Sometimes inserting a dash or sharpening an adjective is all it needs; but if I think you need to reorder your argument, I’ll a) let you know, and b) show you how.  I will not let your critical points get lost in obscure language!

2.  Cut the “flab."

“So the writer who breeds more words than he needs, is making a chore for the reader who reads.”
― Dr. Seuss
Well, which would you rather read: a long piece or a shorter one? The problem with too many words is that the reader wonders if you know where you’re going. You will discover that making your point more concisely enhances the clarity and impact of your writing.

3.  Keep the “voice."

"The one thing that you have that nobody else has is you. Your voice, your mind, your story, your vision. So write and draw and build and play and dance and live as only you can."
- Neil Gaiman
The author has a job; the copy editor has a different  job. I take two measures to ensure that you do not lose your voice: I edit as lightly as possible; and I give you the final say on each and every one of my suggested revisions.
